OGDEN — The Ogden Police Department has a new tool that allows people to file police reports online.

The department posted an informational video on its Facebook page Thursday morning that outlined how the online reporting system works.

Online police reports can be filed from your phone, tablet or computer, according to the video.

The reports can only be filed through the Ogden City website if they fit specific criteria. For example, the crime must have taken place within Ogden city limits and cannot be ongoing when the report is filed.

If the crime does not fit the criteria, the video says to call Weber Area Dispatch at 801-395-8221. For emergencies, call 911 instead of filing online.

The types of police reports that can be filed online are listed on the website.

The video also notes that filing a false police report is a crime, and all false reports will be investigated by police as a class A misdemeanor.

To fill out an online report, you must enter a phone number and email address, according to the video. It did not say whether you have to enter your name.

Once the case has been processed by police, the person who submitted the report will receive reference and case numbers, the video says. To obtain a full police report, you must contact the OPD records department at 801-629-8067, and you must bring a government-issued ID to pick up the report.

Visit ogdencity.com/onlinereporting to file a report or to read more information about the process.
